Destinations ยท Bangkok, between fittings

Song Wat is one of the areas in Bangkok we really like. If you are visiting us to have clothes made, it is a lovely place to spend an afternoon between appointments: coffee in an old shophouse, something good for lunch, a few independent shops, then a seat by the river.

What we like is the mix. This is still a trading neighbourhood, with working shops and narrow lanes alongside newer cafes and galleries. You can be looking at Thai ceramics one moment and choosing a bowl of noodles the next. The older buildings give the street its character; the newer places give you plenty of reasons to stop.

We have put together 17 places across Song Wat and neighbouring Talat Noi. Think of them as a choice of stops, rather than a route to complete. One coffee, one lunch, a little browsing and a river pause are quite enough for a good afternoon.

Make a little room between fittings

Confirm your next appointment with us first, then give Song Wat a half-day of its own. It is across town from our Rama IV atelier, so this is better between appointments than squeezed into a short gap on the same day. Bangkok traffic, rain and the temptation to stay for another drink all deserve a little room.

For a first visit, start with Song Wat Coffee Roasters, choose e-ga or Rong Klan Nuea for lunch, look through Road of Cinnamon and PLAY, then decide whether to stay by the river or continue into Talat Noi. If you prefer fewer stops, make Hansa River House your main meal and build the afternoon around it.

Monday needs a different plan: PLAY, BARBON, Hong Sieng Kong and So Heng Tai usually close that day. Check individual venues before setting out, especially if there is one place you particularly want to see.

The places, beside the map

Choose a coffee, a meal and a few things to see. The Song Wat stops are grouped by what you might feel like doing; the Talat Noi group is the longer extension. Every pin links to its photographs and details below.

Pins show places to visit; this is not a turn-by-turn route.

Select a place to highlight its pin, then follow its link to the photographs and details. Numbers match the entries below.

What are you in the mood for?

For shopping and design, start with Road of Cinnamon and Copenn. For old buildings, compare Hansa, Hong Sieng Kong and So Heng Tai: one is a restaurant in a restored wooden house, one a riverside cafe in heritage buildings, and one a private Chinese courtyard home that welcomes visitors when open.

Coffee, lunch, a little looking around

These entries follow the map numbers, grouped by the kind of stop. They are not turn-by-turn walking directions. Use the map to keep your chosen places together, and leave the rest for another visit.

1. Song Wat Coffee Roasters

For the first proper pause

Song Wat: coffee and something sweet ยท Coffee

We would start with one good coffee rather than try to visit every cafe on the street. Song Wat Coffee Roasters makes that an easy decision: a roastery in an old shophouse setting, with both espresso and slower brews to choose from.

If you like milk with your coffee, look for the dirty or the Song Wat latte. A canele makes a small enough accompaniment to leave lunch open. This is a useful starting point before looking through the shops.

Published hours: Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00; Sat-Sun 09:00-18:00.

Our suggestion: Choose this or Local Boys as your first coffee stop; there is no need to do both.

2. Local Boys Coffee Co.

For a quicker coffee and a look down the lanes

Song Wat: coffee and something sweet ยท Coffee to take away

Local Boys is the other mood: brighter, busier and suited to a quick coffee before carrying on. Its printed takeaway cans have become part of the shop's identity, but the more useful distinction is the small amount of seating.

Choose it when you would rather keep moving, or want a coffee to take into the next part of the walk. The lane is part of the visit; leave a little time to look around instead of treating it as a collection point.

994 Song Wat Road, Soi Mangkorn, Bangkok

Our suggestion: Pick one coffee stop now and save your next break for the river.

3. Arteasia Desserts & Cafe

For a dessert break in an old shophouse

Song Wat: coffee and something sweet ยท Desserts and architecture

Arteasia is a good reason to look beyond the street-level shopfronts. Its upstairs cafe pairs an old shophouse interior with Thai-influenced desserts, giving the architecture as much of a role as the plate.

It suits a slower break after lunch rather than a second breakfast. Share something sweet, look at the building and allow the afternoon to stretch a little. If you have already stopped for coffee, make this your dessert choice.

Find it
947 Song Wat Road, Samphanthawong, Bangkok

Check current opening hours before planning a late-afternoon stop.

Our suggestion: Look up at the facade before going inside. The small architectural details are easy to miss.

4. Gu Long Bao

For something small between stops

Song Wat: lunch and small bites ยท Buns and dim sum

A bun is useful on a walk like this: enough to keep you going without deciding the whole afternoon around lunch. Gu Long Bao is a small counter for buns and dim sum, with little reason to expect a long seated meal.

Choose a filling that appeals and keep the order modest if you also want noodles later. This is one of the stops that makes a loose plan work better than a restaurant reservation for every meal.

Find it
Song Wat / Song Sawat junction, Samphanthawong, Bangkok
Plan your visit
Use the linked map for the counter; published listings use different street addresses.

Our suggestion: Check the queue and what is coming out fresh before ordering.

5. Rong Klan Nuea

For a focused, satisfying bowl of noodles

Song Wat: lunch and small bites ยท Beef noodles

For beef noodles, make Rong Klan Nuea your lunch rather than another snack. The menu centres on beef and broth, with different cuts and textures to choose from. It is a straightforward change of pace after coffee and browsing.

This is also a good moment to decide how much of the day you want to keep. Finish a bowl and stay in Song Wat, or continue towards Talat Noi if you have a whole afternoon free.

A lunch stop; check current hours and allow for a queue.

Our suggestion: If you do not eat beef, choose e-ga or the fishball noodles instead.

6. Lim Lao Ngow

For an old Chinatown food stop

Song Wat: lunch and small bites ยท Fishball noodles

Lim Lao Ngow brings the walk back to the older food businesses around Chinatown. The appeal is specific: fishballs, noodles and a meal that does not require a long menu discussion.

It sits towards the Song Sawat end of the area, making it more natural as an evening return than as a fixed midday stop. Keep it in mind if the afternoon carries on into dinner.

Find it
Song Sawat Road near Song Wat, Samphanthawong, Bangkok

The street stall is an evening option; check opening before making it your lunch plan.

Our suggestion: Check you have selected the Chinatown street stall, as the name also appears on other branches.

7. e-ga

For a longer lunch with friends

Song Wat: lunch and small bites ยท Thai sharing dishes

If you want a table and time to talk, e-ga is our more leisurely lunch choice. Order a few Thai dishes for the middle rather than one each; it leaves room to try different things and makes lunch feel like part of the outing.

There is no need to fit another full meal around it. Choose e-ga or a noodle stop, then use the rest of your appetite for one small sweet or a drink by the river.

Our suggestion: Leave some space in the afternoon after lunch. The shops are more enjoyable without a clock to watch.

8. Road of Cinnamon

For the pleasure of looking closely

Song Wat: shops and art ยท Thai crafts and homeware

Road of Cinnamon is the sort of shop that rewards a second look at a shelf. Crafts, ceramics and decorative objects fill an old building, with much more to take in than a quick souvenir stop suggests.

This is a natural place for us to send anyone who enjoys materials and how things are made. Look at the weave of a basket or the shape of a small bowl. You do not need to buy a large piece to enjoy the visit.

Find it
1326 Song Wat Road, Bangkok

Allow time to browse; confirm the shop's current hours.

Our suggestion: If you buy ceramics, ask about protective wrapping before carrying them through the rest of the day.

9. Copenn.

For a small, personal souvenir

Song Wat: shops and art ยท Thai fragrance

Fragrance is an appealing alternative to another object in your suitcase. Thai brand Copenn has a Song Wat shop for perfume and home scents, with space to try a few rather than hurry past a department-store counter.

Take your time with the first scent you like before trying several more. It is a small stop, but one that fits this part of Bangkok particularly well: an independent brand in an older streetscape.

Find it
1452 Song Wat Road, Bangkok

The official store directory lists the Song Wat branch; confirm its current hours.

Our suggestion: Check that your map is set to Song Wat; Copenn also has a shop on Sukhumvit 24.

10. PLAY art house

For a little art between food stops

Song Wat: shops and art ยท Contemporary art

A gallery changes the rhythm of a food-and-coffee walk. PLAY occupies a former shoe warehouse, and the building's columns and old structure are worth noticing alongside the changing exhibitions.

Keep this as a flexible stop. The work on display will not necessarily match the photographs here, which is part of the reason to look at the current programme before you set out.

Usually open Tuesday-Sunday; check the exhibition calendar. Closed Monday.

Our suggestion: Check the gallery's own feed for exhibition changes and installation days.

11. Hansa River House

For lunch with the water in view

Song Wat: by the river ยท Thai restaurant in a restored house

Hansa is the stop for anyone who would rather make the river the centre of the afternoon. A restored family wooden house now serves as a Thai restaurant, with timber architecture and open views across the water.

Choose it as an alternative to e-ga for a seated meal, not as a second compulsory lunch. The setting gives you a reason to stay after the plates are cleared.

Find it
1616 Song Wat Road, lane beside Wat Pathum Khongkha, Bangkok
Plan your visit
Contact the restaurant before visiting: published opening schedules differ.

Our suggestion: Ask about river-facing seating when you contact the restaurant.

12. BARBON

For a drink as the afternoon becomes evening

Song Wat: by the river ยท River terrace and cocktails

BARBON is a useful ending if you have stayed in Song Wat. Upstairs at Hostel Urby, the terrace looks over the Chao Phraya, so a single drink can become the quietest part of the day.

There is also no need to reserve it for a late night. A late-afternoon arrival leaves time to enjoy the river and still get back across town comfortably.

Find it
1222/1 Song Wat Road, upstairs at Hostel Urby, Bangkok

Published hours: Tue-Sun 15:00-midnight; closed Monday.

Our suggestion: If you have continued all the way to River City, finish there rather than retracing the entire walk for a drink.

13. Hong Sieng Kong

For old buildings and a long river pause

Talat Noi: extend the afternoon ยท Riverside cafe

This is where the guide crosses into neighbouring Talat Noi. Hong Sieng Kong occupies a group of restored heritage buildings, with old timber, brickwork and vintage furnishings leading through to a terrace on the river.

Go for the combination rather than only the view. Have a look around the interiors before choosing a seat, then give yourself enough time for the drink to feel like a break.

Find it
734-736 Soi Wanit 2, Talat Noi, Bangkok

Our suggestion: The terrace can be hot in the middle of the day. Choose your seat for comfort as well as the photograph.

14. So Heng Tai Mansion

For a different view of Bangkok's old homes

Talat Noi: extend the afternoon ยท Chinese courtyard house

Behind the red entrance, So Heng Tai is a Chinese courtyard house still connected to the family who lives there. The timber rooms, red doors and roof details make it a more intimate visit than a large museum.

The courtyard pool is an unexpected detail: it serves a diving school. This is a working home with visitors, so access can change, and the right pace is a respectful one.

15. Mother Roaster, Talat Noi

For coffee with a little discovery on the way in

Talat Noi: extend the afternoon ยท Coffee in an old shophouse

Mother Roaster is a reason to follow the lanes rather than stay on the larger roads. Its Talat Noi cafe is upstairs in an old building, approached through the neighbourhood's working streets rather than a polished shopping complex.

Choose it if the coffee itself interests you, and ask what beans are being brewed. The stairs and older building make it a less simple option for anyone who needs step-free access.

Check the Talat Noi branch's current hours. Access includes stairs.

Our suggestion: Select the Talat Noi branch in Maps; there is also a Mother Roaster on Song Wat.

16. Timo and Tintin

For a playful change of mood

Talat Noi: extend the afternoon ยท Coffee, illustration and art

Timo and Tintin brings a lighter, graphic sensibility to the old neighbourhood. Coffee, sweet things and illustration share the space; its own artwork is part of the identity rather than decoration added at the end.

It is another optional pause, not another coffee you must fit in. Choose it if you like independent design, and look at the exhibition or creative programme alongside the drinks.

Find it

17. River City Bangkok

For a final exhibition and an easy meeting point

Talat Noi: extend the afternoon ยท Art galleries and antiques

River City gives the longer walk a clear destination. Its galleries, antique dealers and exhibitions offer a different kind of browsing after the smaller shops, with enough variety to make one good exhibition a satisfying finish.

Check what is on before you commit another hour. Some exhibitions are ticketed, while other gallery spaces are free to enter. Si Phraya Pier is nearby if you would like to leave by boat.

23 Charoen Krung Soi 24, Talat Noi, Bangkok

Open daily 10:00-20:00. Exhibition admission and schedules vary.

Our suggestion: A practical finish if you are meeting a driver or heading back to your hotel.

Getting there, and knowing when to stop

For Song Wat, MRT Wat Mangkon, Exit 1 is a useful starting point. Walk down Plaeng Nam Road, cross Yaowarat and continue towards the river. Allow roughly ten minutes, with longer for browsing or an unfamiliar route.

By boat, Ratchawong Pier serves the Song Wat side. For a longer walk finishing at River City, Si Phraya Pier is nearby. Check the current service and last boat before relying on either for the journey home.

The afternoon we would suggest

Keep it to Song Wat: coffee at SCR or Local Boys, lunch at e-ga or Rong Klan Nuea, a browse at Road of Cinnamon, then PLAY. Finish at BARBON if it is open, or make Hansa your river-facing meal instead. Pick four or five stops and leave time to explore the streets between them.

Continue into Talat Noi: save a little energy for Hong Sieng Kong and So Heng Tai, then choose Mother Roaster or Timo and Tintin if you want another cafe. River City is a good final stop for an exhibition before heading back. You can also start at River City and work north, using the map to reverse the afternoon.

When you are arranging your trip, send us your arrival and departure dates along with what you would like made. We can confirm the tailoring schedule and your appointment times, leaving the days between for a little more of Bangkok. Our hotel guide helps with the other part of the plan: where to come back to.

For a greener day out, our Bang Krachao guide takes you across the river for the park, cycling lanes and a slower lunch.
